The University of Louisville basketball team will likely be without four key players during its series of exhibition games in the Bahamas next month.
U of L coach Rick Pitino announced on his website this week that incoming freshmen Wayne Blackshear and Kevin Ware are still home finishing up classwork required for eligiblity.
The 6-foot-5, 210-pound Blackshear is a McDonald’s All-American and five-star recruit who is being counted to come in and play a major role at both shooting guard and small forward. The 6-4 Ware, a top 100 recruit, can also play a multitude of positions.
The Cards will also be without junior Rakeem Buckles, who is still recovering from a torn ACL suffered last season. The 6-8 Buckles started 16 games before his injury, averaging 6.8 and a team-high 6.1 rebounds.
Veteran forward Jared Swopshire is also not 100 percent after missing last season due to hernia surgery. Pitino said he hopes Swopshire will be ready by October.
U of L will play four games at the Sir Kendal Isaac Gymnasium in Nassau. They’ll open with an intrasquad scrimmage on Aug. 10 at 7:30 p.m. ET, the Commonwealth Giants on Aug. 11 at 7:30 p.m., the Real Deal Shockers on Aug. 12 at 7:30 p.m. and the Bahamas All-Stars on Aug. 13 at 6 p.m. The Cards will have 10 days of practice prior to leaving for the Bahamas.
