Balanced play leads to UofL route of Boston College

A slow start put the Louisville football team in a hole Saturday night, but the Cards began to click and ultimately ran away with a 38-19 win over Boston College.

If you are looking for faults or complaints about the performance, they will not be found here. One of the biggest questions coming into the game involved the mental state of the team. Could they bounce back after a tough loss to Florida State? Obviously, the answer was a resounding yes.

Others wondered how a defense, without Lorenzo Mauldin and Pio Vatuvei, would handle dual-threat quarterback Tyler Murphy. Murphy completed less than 50 percent of his passes for 149 yard, one touchdown and four interceptions. In the rushing game, the quarterback managed just 41 yards. Simply put, the Cards shut him down.

The star of the night was Gerod Holliman, who snagged three of those interceptions and increased his total on the season to 13. That is just one shy of the NCAA record which has stood since 1968.

On the offensive side of the football, UofL was equally impressive. Brandon Radcliff, Michael Dyer and Reggie Bonnafon combined for 168 yards and three rushing touchdowns. The true freshman quarterback also added two passing touchdowns in a reemerging role within the team.

Starting quarterback Will Gardner continued to show improvement in his play. While none of his passes reached the end zone, he did complete 13-19 for 188 yards.

And on the outside, DeVante Parker continued to dominate. The star senior receiver hauled in 8 catches for 144 yards and a touchdown. It is amazing how seamlessly he has transitioned back from injury, and the boost he has given the offense has been a sight to see.

The Cards will rest up during a bye week, but a showdown in South Bend is on the horizon. The Fighting Irish are coming off a loss to Arizona State and will host Northwestern this weekend. But one cannot help but think ahead to the statement this UofL team could make with an upset of one of college football’s elite.
