For many of the UofL football players, the upcoming game against FIU in Miami, FL is not only another away game but also a homecoming.
“Yeah we have about 25 guys on the team from (South) Florida, so it should be a nice crowd out there,” Eli Rogers said when asked about the game.
Senior receiver Eli Rogers and freshman cornerback Trumaine Washington are among the 25 players from the South Florida area and a total of 32 players from the Sunshine State all together. But don’t let this possible reunion fool you. Both players and their teammates know this is a business trip.
“It’s exciting to be around the home crowd…but it’s still another game on the schedule,” Rogers said.
“Even though we’re going back home and everybody is watching us play, it’s still a business trip and we’re just trying to get one thing done and that’s to get the win,” Trumaine Washington said when asked about being back in Miami.
Washington, who left Miami only four short months ago, will be reunited with past teammates on Saturday. The freshman corner has been in contact with various FIU players throughout the week, going back and forth in anticipation of the game.
“Yeah I’ve been getting a couple phone calls from them and they’ve been telling me yeah we’re going to go at you and we’re going to beat you..I just try to stay humble and tell them, Saturday we’re going to war,” Washington said.
This Saturday at 3:30 p.m., the Cards will hit the road against FIU and while many say they have a distinct advantage on the field, they might also have the home crowd advantage thanks to the dozens of Florida natives on the roster.
