An inside look at the impact shoe companies have with recruits

When Antonio Blakeney decommited from the UofL basketball program just 11 days after his initial commitment, it raised many eyebrows.

Did he have second thoughts? Were there ulterior motives? Did Nike, who sponsors Blakeney’s competitive team, want him to take a look at some of their schools?

At this point Blakeney’s coach has denied that the shoe company has anything to do with it. On the other hand, Jerry Meyer from 247Sports.com claims that the Swoosh did have an influence.

We may never know what really went down between the Cards and the five-star guard, but at cn|2 Sports we wanted to know how much shoe companies can really factor into the recruitment of high school athletes.

We turned to Tim Barnett, a former AAU coach who now works with the FOCUS basketball academy, to get an inside look at what many consider the dark side of recruiting.
