American Pharoah has broken a 37-year drought and become history’s latest winner of horse racing’s coveted Triple Crown title.

He finished the mile and a half in 2:26.65. Frosted came in a distant second with Keen Ice finishing third.

American Pharoah is only the 12th horse in history to sweep the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes. He entered the race as the 3-5 favorite and never lost the lead.

Jockey Victor Espinoza makes history as the oldest jockey ever to win the Triple Crown. Saturday’s win also gave trainer Bob Baffert a place in history after three previous Triple Crown misses with Silver Charm (1997), Real Quiet (1998) and War Emblem (2002).

Churchill Downs’ John Asher says American Pharoah’s accomplishment has re-energized the sport.
