Kentucky advances to second round, beats NKU 79-70

It wasn’t pretty, but No. 2 Kentucky hung on to beat No. 15 Northern Kentucky 79-70 to advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament. De’Aaron Fox led the way with 19 points (8-15 FG) and was aggressive early on. He was a big reason why Kentucky got off to a fast start. UK Hoops hangs on to beat Belmont 73-70

The Kentucky women’s basketball team has advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament, beating Belmont 73 to 70 this afternoon at Memorial Coliseum. The Wildcats got off to a fast start, taking an early 10-point lead over Belmont in the first quarter. Things changed in the second quarter, as Belmont caught fire and went into the half with a 36-35 lead. TJ Beisner and Bradley McKee are down in Indianapolis for Kentucky’s opening weekend of the NCAA tournament. The Wildcats play Northern Kentucky tomorrow night at approximately 9:40 pm. If they win, they will face the winner of Dayton vs. Wichita State on Sunday. This team doesn’t have a lot of tournament experience, as the Wildcats are once again led by superstar freshmen. Kentucky’s defense has struggled throughout most of the season, but it seems to be improving as the Wildcats enter the NCAA tournament. During Kentucky’s 11-game winning streak, the Wildcats have held opponents to 66.8 points per game while forcing opponents to commit 12 turnovers on average. UK Grad enjoying coaching success at Florida Gulf Coast

Michael Fly graduated from the University of Kentucky in 2006 with ambitions of being a college basketball coach. The Fulton, Kentucky native has worked his way up the coaching ladder since he left UK, and is currently in his sixth season as an assistant basketball coach at Florida Gulf Coast University.
